What is a "Winter White"?
No, we're not referencing the shade of denim that's acceptable to wear post-Labor Day...
But instead, a category of wine that has the ability to hold its own alongside the colder nights and richer foods of the season - despite not being red.
These wines distinguish themselves from what we'll call "Summer Whites" in a variety of ways. The first: weight and mouthfeel. A Summer White leans more toward a light-bodied sip and a crisp, clean finish. Whereas a Winter White brings more richness and roundness to the table. Often the essence will linger and expand long after the swallow.
A Winter White might be slightly higher in alcohol than its warm-weather counterpart. You'll also find them boasting more complex aromatic bouquets and a harmony of multi-layered notes that dance across the palate.
While yes...whites may not universally receive top billing as classic fireside favorites, after the rich decadence and bombastic tannins of the holidays, perhaps a reprieve is in order?
The takeaway: don't relegate whites to beach-towel weather. They can also be an exemplary addition to the wooly sweater months. As long as you know which ones to choose.
